Ontario Schools
Carleton University
Undergraduate & Graduate Experience (from Richard):
Program(s):
Psychology BA (2000)
Masters in Social Work (2002)
Overall: I encountered pretty much no alt-med in my studies; I was already quite skeptical, and would have noticed large amounts of woo. It probably helps that my psych studies were with a specialization in neuroscience, and that our program is very much geared at experimental psychology rather than clinical. It is hardly surprising that courses on ion channels, neurodegenerative disease, neuroanatomy, psychopharmacoplogy, etc. don't dabble in woo, but even in my undergrad courses (which included social, developmental, personality, history of psychology, and health psychology) I didn't find much evidence of embracing woo. Statistics and experimental design are required courses (thank goodness; 2 full courses in undergrad and another in grad school), and because of the experimental nature of the program the professors tend to be quite concerned with evidence. The course I took on psychopathology discussed the effectiveness of various treatments, but always citing literature.
