Graduate Experience:
Program(s):
Sociology PhD
Overall:
Alt-med is presented uncritically in some medical sociology courses, and referred to by colleagues, without correction from professors, as a way to get around the "conspiracy of western medicine to hook everyone on drugs." The department contains divisions between qualitative and quantitative approaches, and some of the qualitative professors refer to statistics as 'magic'. While there is a conscious attempt to be respectful to quantitative approaches, it is facile and coupled with a profound dis-ease with math, encouraged by the behavior of the quantitative professors. Many of the graduate students uncritically accept "The Secret" as a mechanism for explaining misfortune. Suggestions for improvement include quantitative professors not overly mystifying their field for prestige, and qualitative professors not referring to the work of quantitative professors as obscure or magical, as both discourages both qualitative and quantitative students from rigor.
